Welcome to the 8th Annual Pieathalon!
You all know the deal–the Pieathletes send me pre-1990 pie recipes and I randomly assign them to another Pieathlete. We make ’em! Then share ’em!
My assignment is courtesy of Dr. Bobb of Dr. Bobb’s Kitschen. He submitted two different recipes and this is the one I chose, from 1978’s Sweet Treat Cookery featuring M&M and MARS candies.
I picked the recipe for Mahogany Pie because it did not involve turning on the oven. It’s summer. Why the hell would I want to turn on the oven?
Furthermore, who doesn’t love making dessert from different desserts?
So I melted the chocolate. Folded it into the ice cream and ended up with this confection:
The recipe didn’t call for whipped cream, but the only prebaked pie shell at the store was 10-inch, so there was a gap between the filling and the crust. NAILED IT!
This pie was good. HOW COULD IT NOT BE?
I don’t know if I tasted the caramel or the nougat, but it was definitely chocolaty (is that a word? Spellcheck isn’t checking it, so it may be???) with a hint of coffee.
Before I get deep into the madness that is this post, let me direct you to the other Pieathletes and their wide world of pies!
OK, that being said. You KNOW that the entire time I was melting and mixing I had this fabulousness in my head:
The last time I saw Mahogany was probably nearly 20 years ago, so it was time for a re-watch.
And it. Is. A. Lot.
It is basically a primer on how to become a fierce drag queen.
I had no idea how much of RuPaul’s Drag Race comes from this movie. From catchphrases:
Ru as Billy Dee and Bianca Del Rio as Diana Ross:
Ru as Anthony Perkins:
Lemme tell you–Mahogany has it all.
Bitch-slaps:
Freak-outs:
And FASHION. OMG the FAAAAAAASSHHHUUUUUN.
CATEGORY IS: CULTURAL APPROPRIATION KIMONO REALNESS!
If that doesn’t look like a Drag Race runway, I don’t know what does.
The movie is one giant fashion montage.
No. Seriously.
All the wigs! All the gowns! All the hats! All the lashes!
Oh yeah, this was supposed to be about the pie. But can you blame me for making it all about Miss Diana Ross?!?!

Gorgeous pie! Fabulous post! xx
The Pie looked gorgeous, your post is fabulous! xx
*goes directly to eBay and buys Mahogany and Lady Sings The Blues on double DVD* Loved this post and your pie looked damn good! Thanks for organising another stupendous Pieathalon xx
Great looking pie. Sounds delish. Love the end scene of Mahogany. Handsome men in shearling coats. Gorgeous, thin women in bold statement fur collars... the 70s ROCKED
I don't think Diana Ross ever ate a Milky Way Bar in her entire life (or even smelled anything fattening)! But both your pie and Miss Ross look absolutely FABULOUS! You definitely NAILED IT!
Oooh, that pie is definitely a winner! Much better tomato aspic with Starbursts.
That pie does sound really good. (Well, I'd leave out the instant coffee.) Plus, now I'm super-happy to know that the Starbursts went into a tomato aspic! I'm glad you asked, even if you're not.
Tomato Aspic. That's what they make with Starbursts. Aren't you sorry you asked? http://dbkitschen.blogspot.com/2014/05/tomato-aspic-with-starbursts.html
I am sorry that I asked.
