Wiener Wednesday: Frosted Franks

Today’s recipe, Frosted Franks, was submitted by DiS1972 reader Diana. I applaud her for finding it.

Ah, Frosted Franks! A sane person may imagine that Frosted Franks is much like 174. Frosted Meatloaf–a little meat wrapped in mashies:

That sane person would be wrong.

Very wrong.

I am sure that you’ve seen this recipe floating along the interwebs:

Hot dogs covered with ketchup and Corn Flake crumbs–sort of a baked corndog.

Well, this recipe is exactly like Kellogg’s Hot Doggities!

But not.

The corn flakes are FROSTED.

Yeah. Recipe: dip hot dogs in ketchup then roll in crushed frosted flakes and bake at 350 for about 15 minutes.

Now, logically, I can understand a person liking this if the flakes were plain, but these are not plain.Ā  They are blasted with sugar and artificial sweetener. Barf.

Regardless, I was impressed at how well the flakes adhered to the frank and kept their crunch:

But they’re still fucking Frosted Flakes.

In an attempt to salvage the hot dogs, I served them with a variety of mustards: yellow, deli, Dijon, and hot/sweet.

It helped.

But not enough.

The mustard flavor fades quickly and then you’re just stuck with a mouthful of hot dogs and candy.

Yeah. I said it. Hot dogs and candy.

I couldn’t eat it.

Perhaps next week wieners will be more successful.Ā We shall see!

  1. I understand why you don’t eat these things – but what did you have for dinner???

    1. I made this during the day so I didn’t have to subject Mr. Sauce to it.
I think I went out that night for dinner!

  2. Frosted Flakes donā€™t taste as good as what can recall from yesteryearā€¦. maybe thatā€™s just me, but perhaps this recipe had a bit more appeal back in the day šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø(?)

  3. When they can’t leave well enough alone. The cornflake ones are pretty good — we use mustard as the “glue” because ketchup on a hot dog is an abomination. ; )

  4. What is wrong with people? Lol! Thanks for taking one for the team and trying it for us all.

  5. In an attempt to entertain myself during the past year, I watched a lot of YouTube videos, including compilations of people making (and eating) street food in Asia. This reminds me of what Koreans do, which is to coat their corn dogs in sugar once out of the fryer, and then add copious amounts of ketchup and mustard. Maybe this is where they got their idea from.

  6. I’d adore seeing you try the snappy frank-cheese rolls that was on the same recipe page as your recent post for herbed franks and rolls 1955. Ground hot dogs! With fancy pimento cheese.
