It’s a Wednesday

Hello, dearies!

No Wieners here. But you know what is?

Apparently that is Goody, the Montgomery Ward mascot. I have no memories of Goody, nor Montgomery Ward. As far as I know there weren’t any Wards in the Pittsburgh area. Or at least not in the North Hills. In the 80s. Tell me if I’m wrong.

The 1963 Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog! The above photo was sent to me by my friend Bob (you may remember Bob from 58. Scandinavian Fish Scallop and 86. Albigdonas con Salsa Fria). Now you may be thinking “why the hell would Bob send you the cover of the 1963 Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog?”

The answer is on page 387.

Note Scene Stealer No. 7

The email from Bob said:  Hey! Remember the time we were eating fish balls and I said I had seen your dinette set somewhere?

Why, yes. Yes I do, Bob.

Well, I found it!

Well, holy cats. It’s my dinette set. Look!

$38.88 may have been a bit on the pricey side for 1963. Especially since my set was free.

It’s so rad that I know exactly where my furniture came from. Thanks, Bob!

Next week I will have another Wiener Wednesday, mmmmkay?

  • There was a Montgomery Ward at Century III Mall in West Mifflin! It closed in the late '80s. I also am pretty sure my aunt Allene had one of those TV trays with the picture of the fruit.

  • Wow, your dining room totally has the charm of a sidewalk cafe! I am particularly enamored of the flourish with which the two chairs and tabletop...end.

  • Awesome! I actually found my bedroom suite in an ad in an old magazine. It's such a feeling of elation, which seems incredibly shallow but there's just something so thrilling about it.

Oh, Montgomery Ward. How sad that kids now aren't even going to know what that was, even if it was the "poor department store" when I was growing up. Isn't that terrible? We were such snobs. Although, $38.88 doesn't seem exactly cheap for 1963.

  • You have no idea how jealous I am of your dinette set. Hell, I'm even jealous of the phrase dinette set. I am being introduced to all kinds of wonders chez vous x
