When Mr. Sauce, Esq. goes out of town, two things inevitably happen when I am left to my own devices:

  1. I undertake home improvement projects like cleaning the hall closet and installing shelves; or affixing LED rope lights under the kitchen cabinets.
  2. I make the more unappetizing DiS cards so I do not subject him to their culinary questionability.

So that’s how I ended up with two DiS1972 dinners one weekend in 2023. I made this dinner and Card No. 170 Tuna Patties because both dinners feature creamed peas. Blah blah blah two birds; one stone.

I truly believe in working smarter, not harder.

But then I said, fuck that. Let’s make this as hard as we can. Why buy a pre-made cake? I’m gonna bake a whole cake for just me.

For this dinner I’m serving you not one, but TWO RINGS OF GOLD!

Yep, DiS1972 asked for an orange cake and I made one using a Bundt pan and this 1980 Jell-O advertisement.

I also tried to match the original dinner and garnished it with candied oranges (which I made myself).

I AM FANCY!

See. Ring of gold:

This dinner was rather straightforward. And I already had the creamed peas, so this took less than 1 hour.

The ring was in the oven for approximately 30 minutes.

I assure you that my ring mold was well-greased. But perhaps not greased enough:

Oh.

Even if it had come out clean, this dish is still a mess.

If DiS1972 stopped at cheese, eggs, and rice, this dish had a fighting chance. But shredded carrots?

I don’t like shredded carrots! Maybe this is why:

I still have nightmares about that crazed, dry-fruit smile.

Back to the ring! I got it back into shape and smothered it with peas.

I give myself very high marks for my photo recreation. Like, this is one of my best.

But I give DiS1972 a failing grade for this dish. Gross.

But the cake was nice.

  • Extra impressed with your photo recreation -- and the candied oranges! Those Jell-O poke cakes were so good.

  • I think that your carrot circle is DELIGHTFUL! If you fancy giving your ring mold another spin there is a rather delicous pea ring in Vincent Price's Treasury - I made it and loved it and Mr Rathbone made a very good joke about where Pee-Wee Herman keeps his keys, "On a Pee-Ring".
