Pieathalon 6: Salvador Dali’s Oasis Leek Pie (1973)

It’s the Pieathalon!!!

I cannot believe that I’ve been coordinating this shindig for six whole years. Bravo to me.

This year, my assignment comes from Peter over at Vincent Price Legacy UK.

Like Vincent Price, Surrealist artist Salvador Dali had a cookbook published in the 1970s. Also like Vincent Price, Dali’s cookbook was published only once. And both Price’s Treasury of Great Recipes, and Dali’s Les Diners de Gala  were recently reprinted (I have a first edition of Vincent’s cookbook)

Rumor has it only about 400 are still in existence, so first editions sell for hundreds and hundreds of dollars

I was excited that this was my assignment because:

  1. I had always heard of this cookbook
  2. I love a celebrity recipe
  3. it’s a savory pie
  4. It has an amazing photo for me to recreate

Look at it. It is glorious!

This recipe was pretty straightforward with the exception of one thing:

Swiss Knight cheese. What the hell is that?

Well, I did some internet sleuthing–it is a pre-made fondue. When I went to the store I was ready to buy emmenthal or gruyere or whatever cheese it is that you use for fondue and make some from scratch.

I nearly shit when I saw this in the cheese section at the Giant:

What are the odds?

Here’s the cheese mixed in with my bacon and leeks:

And here is my finished pie:

The backdrop is Harry Potter bed sheets I’ve had since 2001

Isn’t it gorgeous?

And it was pretty good! Although it could’ve used much more curry in the pastry (I thought that was a very neat idea–putting spices right into the dough).

OK, now it’s time for you to go see what the other Pieathletes baked for you!

  1. Wow, so cool that Salvador Dali had a cook book. And what a great job you did with the pie! I really think the HP sheets gave that photo a certain je ne sais quoi. I love Pieathalon!

  2. Those stick people look really stoked about a fondue party. Who knew Dali published really good recipes? Also, I may have to get some Harry Potter sheets for future food documentation.
Thank you for putting together the Pieathlon!

  3. A pie with a decorative “tree” in the middle seems so appropriate for you! I love it. (And I’m glad the comments are working again!) Thanks for organizing this every year.

  4. Fondue-in-a-bag! Whooda thunk it? 😉 This pie looks fabulous — the leek tree is awesome! Off to read the other pie stories. Thank you for coordinating Pieathalon again. 🙂

  5. Behold the leek palm! It is magnificent! This one sounds pretty good to me. I might have to try it sometime, if I can figure out how to make the leek vase in the center of the dough.

Thanks for bringing us another Pieathalon!
