Snow Day Bloody Marys (Hemingway and Doritos)

It’s a snow day in Baltimore and that means one thing–a post about cocktails!

Full disclosure: I wanted to share these before New Year’s Day, but I’m lazy. And distracted. And lazy.

Let’s be honest. I’m just really, really lazy.

But better late than never, right?

These two new Bloody Marys are the result of Christmas gifts I received.

Firstly, Ernest Hemingway’s Bloody Mary from Food to Die For by Amy Bruni. The book is a compilation of recipes from and inspired by haunted locales in the US.

Bruni writes that this recipe was included in a letter from Hemingway to Bernard Peyton in April of 1947.

It starts with a big chunk of ice in a pitcher. Then 1 pint of tomato juice, 1 pint of vodka, 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce, 1 jigger lime juice, and then cayenne, black pepper, celery salt and Tabasco to taste.

Historically, the booze-to-juice ratio of this recipe isn’t my cup of vodka. But after downing half a pitcher (a Heminwgway-sized portion), anything would probably taste good.

2 out of 5 on the Tomato Scale.

This Christmas, Mr. Sauce Esq. made the bold choice to gift me a bottle of Doritos x Empirical. It’s a Doritos-flavored spirit. No, not just flavored–it is literally made with Doritos.

A Bloody Mary is the only practical application I can imagine for such a liquor.

There is an official Empirical recipe for the Dorito Bloody Mary–which they call the Mary Mary. Find it HERE.

It combines pretty standard bloody ingredients: tomato juice, celery salt, pepper, Worcestershire, cayenne–but throws in tequila and the Dorito booze.

The garnish includes pepperoncini, seasoned celery & a pickled onion. I didn’t have any celery in the house, so I went all the way and subbed the celery with an actual Dorito.

I like the idea of putting a dorito on my drink, but maybe not putting the doritos in the drink.

Rating: 1 out of 5 tomatoes.

However, I loved that this gave us an excuse to buy a giant bag of nacho cheese Doritos.

As for what to do with the bottle–I may just bring this out at parties and dole out shots to freak people out.

  1. Happy New Year! Bloody Marys are my favorite cocktail, but I’d never heard of that Doritos liquor before. Anyway, I’ve missed your posts. I know you’re busy with life and all, but hope to see more of you in the new year.
