The Smirnoff Football Brunch & Bloody Mary (1970)

Happy Super Bowl weekend! Let’s kick it off with some Smirnoff!

It’s a sure bet you and your friends will be watching the game this weekend. Why don’t you all get together for a spirited Smirnoff warm-up before the game? Team up delicious food, good friends, and great Smirnoff drinks with the best seats in town—in front of your TV. The Smirnoff Football Brunch. A simple play that makes for a winning party.

It’s a sure bet your friends will be watching the game this weekend.

But not with you. You weren’t invited.

So why not have your own spirited Smirnoff warm-up before the game? Team up delicious food, the old lady who lives next door, and Ted and Debbie, the new couple across the way, for a Brunch Party!

Your husband will have a companion for game watching and you can gab with the girls—Next Door Old Lady had to put her dog down yesterday and New Debbie’s Tupperware sales are stalling. With some great Smirnoff drinks, you have the best seats in town—in front of your TV!

Serve Eggs Florentine and Canadian Bacon with a side of your new neighbor’s Quaaludes. Have your fill of Honey Bread and Spicy Bloody Marys! Get so drunk on Screwdrivers you don’t notice that New Ted from across the way has taken your husband into the powder room at halftime.

Anita Bryant isn’t the only one getting Up with People.

I don’t have a copy of the Smirnoff Football Brunch booklet (YOURS FREE at  your liquor store or by writing Smirnoff).

But I do have the Smirnoff Brunch Book (1971). Here is the Bloody Mary recipe from the very first page:

SMIRNOFF BLOODY MARY

1.2 oz Smirnoff Vodka
3 oz tomato juice
pinch each: salt, pepper, celery salt
.5 tsp A.1. Sauce

Combine all ingredients and shake well with cracked ice. Strain into a 6 oz. old-fashioned glass over ice cubes.

This was not horrible.

I initially didn’t like it, but after I added a bunch of extra black pepper and another squeeze of lemon, it got better. The A-1 made it taste like a bottled mix. Not my first choice, but this would be good in a pinch.

2/5 on the The Tomato Scale

  1. Terrific post! It gave me a much needed laugh! I suppose I’ll watch (record) the Super Bowl although the Steelers aren’t in it. Always look forward to your food adventures.😊

  2. I never knew that Cher, Glen Campbell, and Barbara Stanwyck hung out together. The more you know…

Even scarier is that I may or may not have those wine/Bloody Mary glasses in a box in the garage.
