Holly Ball 2019: Christmas Sparkle (1966) and Holly Ball Hi-Ball Punch

Punches are easy to make, easy to refresh (just throw more booze in there!), and they give guests an option from just wine or beer–without opening the bar for mixed drinks.
Last year I gave an option to the option because I acquired a second punch bowl set (thanks, Beth!) and made TWO punches!!
The first of the two punches, Christmas Sparkle, was inspired by this Sprite advertisement for “The Modhouse Punch” from a 1966 issue of LIFE

Add just the right note to the festivities. Sprite. Exuberant. Switched on. Noisy. Like nothing you’ve heard before. So tart and tingling.

Holly Ball is always Exuberant. Switched on. Noisy. So this punch was a no-brainer.

1 6-ounce package lime-flavored gelatin
2 cups hot water
1/2 to 1 cup bottled lime juice
2 12-ounce cans frozen concentrate for limeade
90 ounces (9 10-ounce bottles) of Sprite
1 teaspoon almond extract

Dissolve gelatin in hot water. Then stir in frozen concentrate for limeade. Add lime juice. To serve, pour into bowl over 1 1/2 quarts of cracked ice. Add Sprite.

Makes 48 4-ounce servings.

If you like a little more spirit, add a fifth of vodka.

I think that we can all agree that I would want my party to have a little more spirit.

I made this practically as-is, but I omitted almond extract. What the hell’s with that?

For the ice ring, or ice blob, I layered thinly sliced limes.

As an alternative to Christmas Sparkle, I made what I called Holly Ball Hi-Ball Punch.

Per wikipedia: A highball is a mixed alcoholic drink composed of an alcoholic base spirit and a larger proportion of a non-alcoholic mixer, often a carbonated beverage.

So what I did was mix bourbon and ginger ale in a punch bowl and added an ice ring filled with green and red Maraschino cherries.

Look at that ginger ale in action!

I really want to know what happened after getting ice at the 7-11.

So that’s it for my 2019 holiday party!

I’m still bummed that I didn’t have one this year, but that means that Holly Ball 2021 will just have to be extra-awesome to make up for the lost one.

I have already told Mr. Sauce, Esq. that I want to send Save The Dates in October.

  1. Thank you for sharing all the fun of HollyBall 2019. I know this year isn’t the holiday everyone hoped for, me included, but if there’s one good thing that did come out of 2020, it’s all the DiS posts that landed in my inbox! Wishing you and Mr. Sauce Esq. a wonderful holiday and here’s to an even bigger and better holiday party in 2021! May this be a brighter new year for all of us.

  2. Next year will require three punches! I like both of your punch recipes and your punch bowl sets. I am also glad that I’m not the only one who has multiple punch bowl sets — I think they’re so much fun!

Hope you and Mr. Sauce, Esq. have a wonderful holiday! And thank you for all the fun blogs throughout the year!

  3. The green glass punch set w triple-lime vodka spiked sprite is pretty perfect. Remember seeing a bottle of Absolut frozen in block of ice edged with red roses thinking it the most gorgeous, genius visual effect- being told it was fr Martha Stewart. Red + green maraschino are also retro-genius.
