Vincent Price’s Zippy Bloody Mary (1972)

In the early 1970s, Vincent Price was the celebrity spokesperson for Angostura Bitters.  He appeared in a series of print advertisements, each featuring a cocktail or recipe (or both) that includes the herbaceous liquid.

This ad was recently featured on Silver Screen Suppers,

Since I have already mixed up his other Bloody Mary recipe, I had to give this one a try.

Zippy Bloody Marys

Combine:

  • 3 oz. icy tomato juice
  • 1 jigger vodka
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters

This was literally the Carole Landis Bloody Mary from earlier this year, but without the lemon juice.

The 2-1 tomato juice to vodka ratio is the same in both cocktails, and I will say that it may be my ratio of choice. Not too thin, not too thick. Not too overly boozy or tomato-y.

This Zippy Blood Mary should rather be called Lazy Bloody Mary; it truly is a lazy drink. But it’s most definitely not the worst Bloody Mary recipe I’ve tried.

For number of ingredients and amount of effort needed: 4/5

  • Ahh, 4/5 - pretty good! I am going to remember your 3:1 ratio - same as vinaigrette right?! Can't wait for the definitive Yinzerella winner. It's 7am here in London, too early for a Bloody Mary?

  • Vincent Price seemed like a charming fellow. Meatloaf - pie crust Wellington sounds pretty terrific. Would love a pitcher of zippy marys... Mary Monday!

  • I'll definitely keep the 2:1 in mind for my next foray. I'm really curious about the Un-wealthy Wellington, though. I recall that you did a Beef Wellington a while back, but I don't think it was this one. Perhaps something for a rainy day?

    • I did do a DiS Wellington--and it was great!
As I was going through the internet for this post , I came across someone (SyFy perhaps) who tried out this recipe to mixed results.

  • Early drinking is my new hobby, so this is being added to Recipes to Try. Do you have a favorite Bloody Mary receipt yet? A 5/5?
