D’Atri Special Seasoned Lettuce

Today’s recipe features Thyme After Thyme, a Song Blend spice mix, which was sent to me by the lovely folks at The Book Club Cookbook as part of their Blends Bash.

Thyme After Thyme is a great pizza seasoning–I’ve enjoyed it on pizza numerous times–but I wanted to create something new for yinz.

My Blends Bash recipe was inspired by D’Atri’s in Cumberland, Maryland. D’Atri’s is known for their hoagies and subs, all topped with their signature Special Seasoned Lettuce.

Seasoned Lettuce is a thing in Cumberland. The last time I drove through town, I stopped at a restaurant that was not D’Atri’s, and they had their own copycat version of the lettuce. That’s just how special the seasoned lettuce is!

It’s great. It’s like putting Italian dressing on your hoagie without putting Italian dressing on your hoagie.  The lettuce gives you all the flavor without all the liquid. Therefore, your hoagie doesn’t get soggy and there’s a better chance that your sandwich will maintain its structural integrity. It’s easier to eat!

Now I really want a hoagie.

  1. Is this an advertisement for Thyme After Thyme?
I, too, am from Cumberland, Maryland. The original D’Atri seasoned dressing does not include all of the following ingredients: Mediterranean oregano, Basil, Garlic, Onion, Thyme, Fennel seed, Red bell pepper, Crushed red pepper, Parsley, and Marjoram.

  2. There’s a small Italian shop in Frostburg across from the sheets, they make subs with this lettuce also delicious.

  3. Very cool. We are stopping at D’atri’s tomorrow in Lavale. I love this stuff. Now, the secret to the cheese steak sub. Is it close to the “New york chopped cheese steak” or is just a loose meat sandwich?

  4. I just stumbled on this recipe. Thanks for the shout-out to D’Atri’s. I grew up around the corner of the original one on Columbia Street, and as a kid was there on opening day; their cheesesteaks and hoagies are still a treat. But another restaurant in Cumberland had seasoned lettuce on their hoagies many years before them. Patitucci’s was a hoagie shop from the 40’s to the 80’s famous for their seasoned lettuce, which I think had a splash of red wine vinegar as well. Yum. The owner, Lorenzo “Larry”, was a friend of my Italian grandfather. He passed in 1987.

  5. I miss D’Atri’s so much! I moved to GA from there and there is nothing like D’Atri’s anywhere here! The seasoned lettuce is the best. Whenever I go home to visit family, I get two things, a Cheesesteak Sub and a Cheese Hoagie.
