Jose Cuervo Scapulada (1976)

Happy National Tequila Day!

I hope she finds a designated driver….and pants.

Are you a fan of Tequila?

I was never a big tequila fan (with the exception of a margarita now and then at a Mexican restaurant). But in the past few years it’s grown on me. Also, I feel like tequila is everywhere.

Or maybe not. Perhaps I just watch a lot of Real Housewives.

There is the epic trip to Tequila, Mexico that gave us two of my favorite moments in RHONY history:

Sonja drinking straight out of the margarita pitcher:

Luann taking the nose dive into the bush:

And subsequently face planting onto the patio:

I don’t know how she didn’t break something there. I also don’t know how she woke up the next day.

On the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills the ladies drink Casamigos (it’s the George Clooney tequila) like it’s been discontinued.

This scene is my absolute favorite with Denise Richards being a dick to a NYC waiter:

“Oh, that is not a Reposado. That’s a Blanco, I know my tequila.”

Makes me laugh out loud every time.

There is actually a bottle of Casamigos Reposado in my bar right now. I’m looking at it. (Confession: I may or may not have bought it just to see what the fuss was all about).

FYI, it’s not bad.

Now for the cocktail!

I have never heard a Scapulada–have you?

It’s not even in my 1972 Jose Cuervo/Ortega promo pamphlet.

When you google “Scapulada” the only thing that pops up is this advertisement (and the scapula bone).

JOSE CUERVO SCAPULADA

  • 2 oz. Jose Cuervo
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz coconut milk
    Shake. Serve on ice.

I floated some pieces of frozen pineapple on the top in an attempt to make it pretty.

I can see why the Scapulada did not catch on.

The color looks like watered down milk. There isn’t enough pineapple juice to give it any real color. The drink is beige.

It tastes like a shadow. I say that because the drink tastes faintly of everything. It tastes like what I imagine the bottom of a drink like this would taste like. Like there’s just enough coconut milk and pineapple juice to tamper the tequila, but not enough to make it taste anything much other than watered down Cuervo.

It tastes like nothing.

OMG.  Just as I typed this: Do I have The ‘Rona?

OK. I don’t have a fever. I think I’m fine.

The drink just sucks.

Of course I’m still going to drink the rest of it. I do not let good booze go to waste.

Question:  does anyone have any idea of what to do with pineapple juice and coconut milk?

I have 63 oz of pineapple juice (only came in the big bottles!) and a nearly full can of coconut milk–unsweetened/low fat.

Oh shit is that what I did wrong?

Regardless, all food, drink and storage recommendations are welcome.

  1. All I can think of is adding rum to the pineapple juice and coconut milk and bloody mary mix to the tequila — not all in the same glass. ; )

Although, I might be ready to put it all in one glass to get my mind off the cringe-worthiness of that “anatomical” ad! ARGH! (A little bit of the retired science teacher in me just died…)

  2. Pour the unsweetened/low fat flavor-desert down the sink and mix the pineapple juice with some Malibu. Get full-strength coconut milk next time and use what’s left after cocktails in a nice curry. 😉👍

  3. You’re on your way to a pina colada with the pineapple and coconut. Wouldn’t be authentic but it might work.

  4. Egads, as soon as I saw pineapple juice and coconut milk I almost gagged! Mix the pineapple juice with vodka & carry on!
