Wiener Wednesday: Supper Surprise (1970)

It’s Wiener Wednesday! Are you ready for a Supper Surprise?

Of course you are!

Like so many other dishes that have appeared on the blog, I chose this one for the name.

SUPPER. SURPRISE.

What the hell is an Oz Kebab? Is it Australian? Was Frank L. Baum a fan?

So I googled. There are numerous Oz Kebab locations in Australia.

They look like pretty standard kebabs.

No surprise there.

But these Oz Kebabs are packed full of surprises:

Literally packed full of surprises–meatballs with pickle and cheese centers! On a stick! With hot fruit cocktail!

And Wheaties!

They didn’t have Wheaties at the grocery store so I used Total. That’s the same thing, right?

No, seriously. Are they the same thing? I don’t remember ever having Wheaties so I don’t know.

OK, let’s get to those kebabs.

These were a HOT MESS. The mix was super-soggy so I kept adding more and more “Wheaties” to firm them up.

It didn’t matter, though. Even when I’d get the mix to go around the “surprises,” the meat would immediately slough off of it when I tried to skewer.

It took multiple tries to get these together.

WHEATIES AND WEENIES!

I had them in the broiler for 5 minutes per side.

I love the idea of these broiler dinners because clean up is a cinch. I’ve had ups an downs with them.
It’s Lamb Night! from the Meals Men Like chapter of BH&G So Good Meals was not a winner but Circle Pups from BH&G Meals in Minutes was.

Supper Surprise……..NOT A WINNER.

Ew.

  1. I have that same cookbook. I have this weird love for old cook books with scary gross looking foods in it. I even have a cookbook that is nothing but grits recipes. Enchiladas made with grits, sushi made with grits.

It’s the Jell-O salads and tomato aspics I want to try. Some day maybe I’ll brave them.

  2. Yes, we NEED to know about the hot fruit cocktail with nuts combined with wieners/meatballs(?). Disgustingly, the hot fruit cocktail with nuts in my husbands opinion would make a great ice cream topping.

    1. it wasn’t anything special. It tasted exactly like warm fruit cocktail with some nuts thrown on top.

  3. Happy National Hot Dog Day! Love that it lands on Weiner Wednesday! That’s serendipity.

The sandwich* part of this recipe looked so promising. I mean, who doesn’t love a meatball with a surprise inside? And besides, people use corn flakes to make meatloaf; why wouldn’t Wheaties/Total work just as well? (Yep, essentially the same — I ate a lot of Wheaties/Total breakfasts growing up.) Was it the sweetness of the cereal that messed things up?

Enquiring minds and all that: How was hot fruit cocktail with nuts?

    *I don’t mean to open up a can of worms… ; )
