Wiener Wednesday: Vincent Price’s Stuffed Frankfurters (1965)

Back by popular demand (and by popular demand, I mean that I just wanted to do it again) It’s WIENER WEDNESDAY!!!

To kick of this month of weenies, I thought I’d ease into it with Vincent Price’s Stuffed Frankfurters.

My beautiful first edition

For those not in the know, Mary and Vincent Price’s Treasury of Great Recipes is built around the menus of some of the world’s best restaurants–many of which are no longer there. (See my versions of Bookbinder’s Snapper Soup and Loch-Ober’s New England Boiled Dinner. )

One of the chapters is dedicated to Chavez Ravine, which I thought was an upscale Mexican restaurant, but no! It’s Dodger Stadium! The Chavez Ravine chapter includes recipes inspired by the ball park–franks and hamburgers, etc.

It’s a hot dog! With a beer…and a weed…and some rocks?

FUN FACTS! Chavez Ravine was a Mexican-American community in LA that was basically razed for the ball park.

But don’t let that get you down! Have a frankfurter!

And YOU get a hot dog! And YOU get a hot dog! EVERYONE GETS A HOT DOG

Vincent Price liked a hot dog.

I don’t know if I’d say that a hot dog makes him lose control the way it does for Patty Duke:

Or Betty White:

But he likes them.

“Here, in all its glory, is the great American hot dog. Originally a sausage invented in Frankfurt, the hot dog is now as American as blueberry pie, and under the proper circumstances it can be one of the gourmet treats of the national larder…there is nothing more soul-satisfying than the first succulent bite into the juicy frankfurter. Whether you slather your hot dog with mustard, relish, and onions, or eat it purist style with just a delicate dab of mustard, it is, in that brief time, the perfect food.”

AN ESPECIALLY HAPPY COMBINATION!

Well, was it? An especially happy combination?

Let’s break these down:

pre-bacon. pre-broil

Hot dog? GOOD.
Cheese? GOOD.
Sauteed shallots? GOOD
Bacon? GOOD.

Stuffed Frankfurter? GOOD.

Seriously good. 100% would make again.

Like I said at the beginning of the post, I wanted to ease into Wiener Wednesdays.

But now I’m ready to jump in and I NEED IDEAS!

  1. I adore that cookbook! It’s so fun to look at the old menus – and the prices! My favorite family wiener treat was hot dogs sliced (crosswise) and browned in butter with a can of baked beans dumped on top. It’s still comfort food to me, 50 years later. I actually had it last week…..

    1. P.S. And my dad would wrap a strip of bacon around a hot dog and secure it with toothpicks, cook it on the grill and slather with barbecue sauce. Served that in a bun. Yum….

  2. You’re in good company. I’ve read that Betty White truly enjoys both hot dogs and vodka! 🙂

I’ve had this dish without the sautéed onions and that was delicious — I can only imagine the onions/shallots taking it to the next level!

  3. Yaaaay!! Wiener Wednesdays are back! I have been so nostalgic lately, that my tear ducts are getting a work out. The stuffed dogs look quite tasty. I’ll have to try them out for sure.

  4. I’m trying this for the 4th. All Hail Vincent Price!. When one of his movies comes on, I know I’m in for a fun time.
