Cuervo Bloody Mary with Ortega Huevos Rancheros (1972)

Hello, friends!

Are you looking for something different for this year’s Cinco de Mayo?

Maybe something that’s non-taco (even though it is a Taco Tuesday)?

Maybe something a little more low-key because of the pandemic and shit?

Well, I have the dish AND drink for you!

I found this in my collection while I was searching for new and exciting Bloody Mary recipes.

This is a little 1972 promotional recipe booklet for Jose Cuervo tequila, Arrow Triple Sec, Inglenook Table Wine, Beaulieu Table Wine, and Ortega foods (including Snap-E-Tom!). Mother and Father Sauce gave it to me with a bag of other similar booklets and cookbooks.

Just so you know, this is a full brunch.

Top to bottom: Cuervo Collins, Bloody Mary, and Margarita

I decided on this dish because I had every thing in my kitchen.

Well, instead of Ortega green salsa I had the little can of green chiles. But that worked in a pinch!

Here are the results:

I didn’t fry the tortillas–I just nuked them.

And here are my scribbled notes (which I love to find weeks or months after I made something).

Tequila is weird.

Also, no ice.
Lemon, but not lime for tequila?
I do not like it.

But I can’t stop drinking it.
Do I like this?
It’s good with the spicy food.
The more I eat and the more I drink the more I like this shit.

The egg yolks are overcooked an broken, but I still like this. A LOT.

I did like it a lot.

I also love it when my notes end up being some sort of free form poetry that I would totally have submitted as a workshop assignment when I didn’t have anything else; and would have most likely received an A.

100% would make this brunch again and you could definitely make this to work with whatever you have in your fridge/pantry.

Now that I think about it, I am going to make this for brunch tomorrow.

I have cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinner nearly each day during quarantine. Not necessarily because I have been hungry–and I could definitely stand to miss a few meals–but it has given some added structure and purpose (because I love feeding Mr. Sauce) to my days.

And there it is!

Cuervo Bloody Mary and Ortega Huevos Rancheros—perfect for your Cinco de Mayo or for the day after when you are nursing a hangover from too many tacos and one too many margaritas!

3/5 on the Tomato Scale (for sheer weirdness and drinkability)

  1. This has hit me right between the eyes as I begin a two day writing retreat. I have two days off work and planned to eat healthy food and lay off the booze to boost my creativity. It’s 7am now and all I want to do is get in the kitchen and make myself Huevos Rancheros and a Bloody Mary. ARG!

  2. The worst hangover I ever had came from drinking (more than) a couple tequila bloody marys. I learned my lesson that day!

The picture of all the Ortega products makes me think of our pantry when I was in elementary school. My mom was a definite fan. I usually make my own salsa now, but I still love Snap-E-Tom.
