2-in-1 International Recipe Card Collection: Mississippi (1977)

We made a huge booze run(s) as soon as there was the tiniest whiff that there would be a chance that liquor stores would close. I bought 18 bottles of Pinot Grigio and I have 3 boxes of wine–2 rose, one white. We also got gin and vodka.

Yes, I know that this makes me sound like a lunatic. But you know, when this thing drags on into April, you’ll be calling me for a drink.

I am taking this chance to go into our liquor cabinet and explore some of the bottles that we don’t typically open.

This was my first experiment with creme de cassis.

What the hell is creme de cassis?

Well, I know that it is supposed to be black currant flavored, but since I don’t think I’ve ever had a black currant, I’ll have to just to trust the liquor people.

Well, that recipe is simple enough.

I wish that my drink had turned out a little pinker. I also wish that there had been more creme de cassis in it, because the Mississippi ended up just tasting like gin and lemon.

Or maybe not. Maybe that’s exactly what it was supposed to taste like. But I have a whole stack of recipes with creme de cassis in it to find out.

  1. You used creme de cassis before to make pink champagne. You said it didn’t take like anything then. I’m very fond of black currant jam.

  2. 1 tsp may be a little stingy on the Creme de Cassis. All the drinks I’ve had with it contained at least a tablespoon to a 1/2 jigger (or more). I’ll chime in on the Kir or Kir Royale. A regular Kir is CdC plus regular white wine — ooh la la, so very French! 🙂

Also, your liquor cabinet looks pretty cool — I’d love to see a picture of the whole thing (closed and open). For some really odd reason, I find liquor cabinet/bar home furniture fascinating.

Hope you’re doing OK. Please give Margot a little chin scratch from me. (My foster cat vacillates between “I love you” and “I’m going to kill you” so I take my hands into my hands each time I go in for a pet — we’re working on it with lots of treats! 🙀😹)

    1. I’ll def take pics of the bar.
We have tried, unsuccessfully, to adopt a cat since the school I work for is closed until the end of April. It would be such a good time to get a new pet!

  3. I have another Creme de Cassis recipe. We were on our honeymoon in Santa Fe in 1981 when we discovered this cocktail. We haven’t added raspberries but you could. It’s called Kir Royale and it’s very tasty.

    Here is what you do:
Add 2 to 3 teaspoons Crème de Cassis to each flute. Drop in 3 to 4 raspberries. Fill each flute with sparkling wine. Serve immediately.

    Cheers!
