2-in-1 International Recipe Card Collection for Mixed Drinks and Hors D’Oeurves (1977): Bloody Mary

How ya doing? Are your schools closed? Are you self-quarantine-ing? Deep cleaning your house? Building a bomb shelter? Panic shopping?

Speaking of panic shopping, have you been to the store recently?

I went to the supermarket yesterday, which was not the best decision–the parking lot was like something out of Mad Max. Cars were playing chicken to get out of there.

Of course the cleaning products, toilet paper, and paper towel aisle was decimated, but they were lousy with clothes detergent (which was good because I needed some). The only water left was distilled–not spring.  Every single bulb of garlic and lemon was taken. Bananas were wiped out, but were quickly replaced. Beans were really low, but canned tomatoes were not. There was a mad rush for ramen noodles and Kraft Mac n’ Cheese.

I saw a cart with 5 bottles of orange juice. Where are they going to store that much refrigerated orange juice? There was one guy with nothing but assorted chips and multiple frozen pizzas.

I can only imagine how much of the food purchased yesterday will go bad and end up in the trash.

Yes, I am a crazy person who went grocery shopping the day that the WHO declared that we’ve got a pandemic. However, I wasn’t there with the intent to hoard–I was just doing regular shopping. Purchasing the items for my St. Patrick’s Day corned beef & cabbage and picking up some other things I’d like to cook over the weekend: pork chops, Cornish hens, the ingredients for Caesar Salad.

OK, I’m not hoarding, but I did buy one thing specifically for self-quarantine: a big ass bottle of tomato juice–because if by some chance I end up working remotely you KNOW I’ll be doing so with a Bloody Mary!

Today’s Bloody Mary is from the 2-IN-1 International Recipe Card Collection for Mixed Drinks and Hors D’oeurves (1977).

Let’s face it–we’re at the point where all of these recipes are starting to bleed together…

But those Rollmops are definitely something new!

I didn’t make them, but I am intrigued by the Anchovy Roules. I have all the ingredients in the pantry. Maybe I’ll give it a go if I’m trapped at home.

Anyhoo, this is the Bloody Mary:

My notes were as such (I totally have a little Bloody Mary notebook):

  • Shaken not stirred
  • Very vodka-y
  • only 4 oz juice
  • 1/8 tsp is SO little Worcestershire
  • 1 dash Tabasco–too little
  • too little lemon

I tried to fix it and added the following to the original drink:

  • 3/8 oz lemon juice
  • add 1/4 tsp Worcestershire
  • 2 dash Tabasco
  • black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp celery salt
  • 1/4 tsp lime juice
  • 1/4 tsp pickle brine
  • 3 stuffed green olives
  • green onion garnish
  • sprinkle Old Bay

Very improved!

2/5 rating on the Tomato Scale (original recipe)

Have a great weekend, everyone! Stay safe, stay healthy, wash your damn hands, and stay away from the supermarket!

  1. Old Bay on a Bloody Mary? EXCELLENT IDEA! Heads up that there is a Carole Landis inspired Bloody Mary on the Silver Screen Suppers website that has your name on it –
    special ingredient Angostura Bitters x

  2. The doctored version sounds really good! I don’t know why the recipe was so stingy with Worcestershire and hot sauce. Can’t really say that the 70s were anti-strong-flavors, if they were mainlining anchovy-wrapped olives.

I stopped by the supermarket today to pick up some string cheese for working with the dogs at the animal shelter this afternoon. Not only were they totally out of string cheese — as well as out of bread, all paper products, and ramen (RAMEN???) — but every checkout line was at least 10 deep. The dogs had to deal with my regular training treats.
