190. Chicken Fried Steak

Another Dinner is Served 1972 recipe card, and another dish that I basically have no recollection of because I made it back in May.

Yes, MAY. I am nearing the one-year mark for some of these posts. Ridiculous!

THIS is why I’m asking yinz to get on my ass if I don’t post at least once a week.

Fun fact: I never had Chicken Fried Steak before this. I think because I never knew exactly what it was.

If you look at the timeline above, you’ll see that the goal is to do this within and hour and a half.

I almost did that–I know because I kept “detailed” notes while cooking. And by “detailed” I mean that half of it is nonsensical.

5:50 take meat out of fridge and slice onions.

6:08: ready to dip!

oil heating drying to slice onions

6:12 dipping

6:14 all in skillet

6:20 put in onion rings and salt and pepper. Lid on–low heat

6:29 start peach filling

6:50 cobbler in oven (it is messed up had not enough bisquick mix to cover top)

6:58 microwave peas
make fake mashies (prep)

7:09 mash in microwave

7:10 move meat. start on gravy

7:25 photos. DiS!

Here is the peach cobbler that I literally cobbled together (yes, bad puns!) with what I had in the cupboard:

Crust:
1 cup Bisquick
1.5 tbsp butter
1 egg
2 tbsp milk

FIlling:
(note: it took a lot of effort to decipher what I wrote down)
sliced peaches
curry
corn starch roux

Curry?

OK, me. You do you.

For someone who has little idea of what to do when it comes to baking, I was impressed by my Maguyvering.

I am going to assume that this was okay because I don’t remember otherwise. I mean, I did eat it ALMOST A YEAR AGO.

  1. CFS is one of my very favorite things to eat, which unfortunately means I don’t get to have it very often. 😉 The best I ever had came from a little restaurant called The Apple Dumpling, which was out in the middle of nowhere in central Illinois. That being said, I’ve never had it with onions. Hmmmm…interesting.

I would have never guessed that you were short Bisquick for the cobbler, either. The crust looks really good. My mom used to drop mounds of Bisquick dough over the peaches and then top with cinnamon sugar. Growing up we had a most prolific peach and apricot tree, so summer cobbler was a staple. The apricot finally died a couple of years ago at 45; the peach suffered an ill fate years and years earlier at the hands…well…teeth of a nutty Doberman we had when I was in college.
