Two-Way Recipes: Cherry Waldorf Salad (1963)

Haaaaay girl haaaaaay!

With mayonnaise it’s a salad, but with whipped cream, it’s a dessert!

You laugh, but that’s how the 1963 edition of The Joys of Jell-O intended it to be!

When you serve them as desserts, garnish with prepared dessert topping or whipped cream. As salads, unmold them on crisp greens and top with mayonnaise or salad dressing.

The two way recipe that I selected to feature on Chopped is the Cherry Waldorf Salad.

I chose this recipe because

The illustration was pretty
It is a two-way recipe
It features a lot of diced fruits and vegetables
Of course it features vegetables, because without the vegetables we could not call this a salad
It also gave me a reason to bust out my Veg-O-Matic (which the crew did film me using, but it didn’t make the cut). Shall we say the footage was…chopped?

As you can see, the Veg-O-Matic did more of a julienne than a dice on those apples:

The crew had me taste the Jell-O.

How was it?

Crunchy. Very crunchy. Not offensive, but crunchy. And celery had no place there.

But mayonnaise sure as hell didn’t have any business being there.

I nearly gagged as soon as I tasted it and spit it out in the sink.

Gross. So Gross. So so so so gross.

But it did me think about how much worse it would be with salad dressing. And what kind of salad dressing? Green Goddess? French? Catalina?

This is taking me to a dark place, dudes.

I, for one, NEVER doubted your Brady chops. :)

The Cherry -- and occasionally Lime -- Waldorf Salad was an oft-seen member of our dinner rotation growing up. (Minus the bananas and add walnuts, as my dad only ate bananas in their natural state.) The "salad dressing" they're referring to was a twist on mayo (think Miracle Whip -- only worse) and fortunately never made it onto our table. Mom was "Best Foods (Hellman's) or bust!" And a Veg-o-Matic may or may not have been used in the preparation of said salad. BTW, it is also shape of the Jello piece that determines whether it is a salad (square), a side (large mold), or a dessert (individual molds/glasses). ;)

Now, if you really want weird, that lovely orange "French" dressing (although Wishbone, not A&P) was used on cottage cheese and pineapple. *shudder*

Yes, the 60s was one weird-ass decade!
