It’s back, kittens!
By popular demand, every Wednesday will be a Wiener Wednesday until July 23rd, which is National Hot Dog Day.
(Apparently there are multiple National Hot Dog Days, but I’m gonna go with the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council and celebrate on the 23rd).
I have some real humdingers in the pipeline for ya, but first we’re gonna go nice and easy with Hot Dog Rolls With Crispy-Fried Onion Rings.
This comes from the 1975 cookbook The Creative Cooking Course, edited by Charlotte Turgeon. Like so many other of my favorite cookbooks, this one hails from Canada. It features 1200 recipes and 2500 photos in full color!
And those full-color photos are…interesting. I mean, these are really up there in the what-the-hell-is-that-do-people-actually-eat-that-why-would-someone-do-that-to-perfectly-fine-ingredients food photography.
Half the photographs are inscrutable. There is no knowing what meat lurks under cream sauces and puff pastries.
Seriously. I have no idea what that is.
Onto the dogs!
Last year, Mr. Sauce’s mum gave me the Copper Chef 14-in-1 Wonder Cooking System.
I use the grill pan on the regular, but my fry-baskets remained unused. But now, thanks to Wiener Wednesdays and The Creative Cooking Course, I got to bust out the fry baskets for the very first time!
A little mustard, a slice of American cheese and…
That thing in the background is a gavel I borrowed from work. I didn’t have a mallet, so that was the next best thing!
This was delicious. How could it not be delicious? It’s hot dogs and cheese and onion rings.
Remember to check back next week for another Wiener Wednesday!
In the meantime, here are some hot dog facts. Because you can never have enough hot dog facts.
Also–if you have a vintage hot dog/sausage recipe you’d like to see featured, email it to yinzerella@gmail.com or post it over on the Dinner Is Served 1972 Facebook page.
