“What Am I, Chopped Liver?” Chopped Liver

Granted, I’ve only been in the online dating game less than a month, but I just got back from my worst online-dating-date ever. Oh, yes. Newsflash, kittens: I’m out cruising in cyberspace. I’m very 21st century. I didn’t plan on blogging any of my dating escapades, and I don’t intend to in the future, but thisContinue reading “What Am I, Chopped Liver?” Chopped Liver →

WIENER WEDNESDAY: Wiener Bean Pot

I want to institute “Wiener Wednesdays” here at Dinner is Served 1972. It’s just an idea, but I don’t think it’s an entirely horrible one. Those BH&G cookbook people really loved themselves some wieners and I know that there are some real hot dog doozies out there on the interwebz and in some of yourContinue reading WIENER WEDNESDAY: Wiener Bean Pot →

Readers’ Choice: International Edition

Hola! Bon Jour! Konnihciwa! Buon Giorno! Remember how I put things up to a vote and you (and by “you” I mean Veg-O-Matic) decided that I would make Sauerbraten (a.k.a Pot Roast From the Motherland)? Well, I want to do that again just for shits and giggles. And also because I have such a hardContinue reading Readers’ Choice: International Edition →

7. Calico Potato Salad

The lovely people at Arganica gave me a free mixed produce crate to work my magic on and give their subscribers some ideas on what to do with the massive quantities of delicious produce that arrives on their doorstep. And Dinner is Served! was a great starting point for me to make a dish forContinue reading 7. Calico Potato Salad →

Lockerman Dip

I don’t know about you, but some of my favorite recipes (retro or otherwise) are those that are so simple that someone can tell you how to make the entire dish in under 1 minute and you don’t have to write a single thing down. For instance, the tiny bits of heaven that are myContinue reading Lockerman Dip →

Sterling Cooper Draper Rumaki & Gimlet

Darlings, it really does seem as though it were yesterday that we were reintroduced to the goings on of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. And here we are, already at the end of another season. I really hope that I don’t have to wait another entire year for the show to return. I could be deadContinue reading Sterling Cooper Draper Rumaki & Gimlet →

BH&G Cooking for Two: Peanut Butter Special

I am a sucker for any recipe that has a superlative in its name: deluxe, luscious, spectacular, impossible, amazing–so it’s no surprise that I was drawn to Peanut Butter Special from Better Homes & Gardens Cooking for Two.  Also, the chapter was titled “Sandwiches–Good for a Twosome.” But we all know that sandwiches are bestContinue reading BH&G Cooking for Two: Peanut Butter Special →

Hello Jell-O: Mojito Mold

So I participated in a Jell-O mold contest (yes, a Jell-O mold contest) and won a signed copy of Hello Jell-O! by the Jell-O Mistress of Brooklyn, Miss Victoria Belanger. My winning entry was the magnificence that is Frosty Melon (although, let’s face it, the Jellied Veal has been the apex of my Jell-O makingContinue reading Hello Jell-O: Mojito Mold →

Everything Old Is New Again: DiS! Retro Renovation

If you have been with DiS! for a while you know about the Command Center. You definitely know about it if you know me in real life–ha! Regardless, as a refresher, THIS is the Command Center: It’s what occupied all of the space in my eat-in-kitchen for 2 years. The Command Center is a giantContinue reading Everything Old Is New Again: DiS! Retro Renovation →

Lessons in Leftovers: Korean Beef Tacos & Prime Rib Fajitas

Inspired by both a Cooking Light recipe and my recent visit to Honey Pig Korean BBQ (gosh, do I love Korean food), I used some of my leftover prime rib from The Prime Rib to make Korean Beef Tacos. I thinly sliced some beef off the bone and marinated it in a mixture of soy sauce,Continue reading Lessons in Leftovers: Korean Beef Tacos & Prime Rib Fajitas →

78. Chicken a la Drag Queen

I believe that it was April 23 when the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race was supposed be crowned. But Ru, that bitch, said NO! You have to wait until the reunion! Well, that just threw my friend Dan into a tizzy. He screeched and flailed and I lost a wine glass. Yes, he was soContinue reading 78. Chicken a la Drag Queen →

Lessons in Leftovers: Hot Corn Crab Artichoke Dip

Lordy, lordy, my darlings. It has been so long. Way too long. Brian is so ashamed by my lack of attention to Dinner is Served! that he can’t even show his face. In my defense, I started a new job at the beginning of May and it requires a lot more of my attention thanContinue reading Lessons in Leftovers: Hot Corn Crab Artichoke Dip →

Behold the Miracles of Miracle Whip

Hello, darlings! Oh, things have been mighty crazy over here in Dinner is Served! land—-believe you me! But that doesn’t mean I haven’t squeezed in a little time here and there to whip up some retro deliciousness (or disgustingness, depending on your taste). In fact, was just invited to be a guest blogger for TheContinue reading Behold the Miracles of Miracle Whip →

Friday Fail: Caesar Salad Parmesan Cups

Don’t get too excited. I didn’t make those, but aren’t these just the cutest things ever? Caesar Salad in a crispy Parmesan shells!  I love Caesar Salad so these piqued my interest immediately. Saucy Franks

After the Circle Pups I had some hot dogs left over so I turned to the Better Homes & Gardens Casserole Cook Book (1967) to test out another frankfurter spectacular. Since I am decidedly indecisive, I let Cleve make the decision. But first I gave him some recipes from which to choose. They were: Broiler Bean-erContinue reading Saucy Franks →

Ice Cream-Cake Roll

Now for the highlight of my Easter dinner: The Ice Cream-Cake Roll. Now, So-Good Meals Meals Men Like It’s Lamb Night! provided a recipe to make an Ice Cream-Cake Roll from scratch. BH&G So-Good Meals: “It’s Lamb Night!”

For this year’s Easter Sunday dinner I decided to go with another selection from the Better Homes & Gardens Creative Cooking Library. The @smirnoff Ice PIck (1975) "Andrea is meeting my family for the first time.
I told her to wear white.
It isn't a must at The Club, but definitely--strongly--recommended. And here she comes in looking like a McDonald's employee with her toes hanging precariously over the edge of her sandals. They're gripped on for dear life as she tries to play croquet.
At least in those ugly pants you can't see the Smirnoff Ice Pick she spilled all over herself. I don't think she knows she's not drinking iced tea. Uncle BoBo keeps refilling her glass. She sways ever slightly more with each shot.
Uncle BoBo can't stop staring at her.
I don't know if it's because he's offended that she totally miffed the dress code, or if he's trying to figure out what she looks like under all that brown corduroy.
I hate Uncle BoBo.
Oh god, would it have killed Andrea to wear a pastel?"
