Irish Cheer (One Day Late)

Well, on St. Patrick’s Day I posted the recipe for the drink that I was going to make that night, the Irish Cheer:Which I did, as promised, make on Tuesday night. But I was tired, so I didn’t post it until today. Whatever. Don’t hate me. Now, let me note that I was rather skepticalContinue reading Irish Cheer (One Day Late) →

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Seems like a lot of people plan on celebrating tonight, at least based on the number of folks who have checked out my recipe for Corned Beef & Cabbage in the past week or so. I will be celebrating tonight as well (although I am not the least bit Irish!), with some friends. Rick isContinue reading Happy St. Patrick’s Day! →

Party Like a Mad Man!

Hey kittens! I have some very exciting news–I am participating in a virtual party on April 5th in honor of the last 7 episodes of Mad Men. So you can get in the spirit as well, I am giving away a copy of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook by Judy Gilman and Peter Zheutlin! Dine LikeContinue reading Party Like a Mad Man! →

53. Stuffed Breast of Veal (or Lamb)

Remember that time I told you about the Best Worst Date Ever (or the Worst Best Date Ever, depending on how you want to spin it)? Well, to refresh your memory, one of the things that made the night so memorable was that the dude brought me a gift. On a first date. The giftContinue reading 53. Stuffed Breast of Veal (or Lamb) →

27. Swedish Meatballs (Readers’ Choice)

Snow day! Snow day! Snow day! Yeah, here in Baltimore we are getting hit by quite the winter (spring?) storm. And everything is closed. EVERYTHING. It is supposed to snow until 5pm tonight, but look at what I’ve got outside my window before noon: My street doesn’t even look like a street. I don’t think I’llContinue reading 27. Winter Break!

If you follow the FB page, you may remember that on the 9th I made the comment, “I think I want to take February off.” Well, there’s only 3 days of the month left (we’re not in a Leap Year, right?), but  I am still going to take the rest of the month off fromContinue reading Winter Break! →

Stuffed Burger Bundles for Burt Reynolds

Well, I really dropped the ball with this one. I almost missed the birthday of one of DiS!’s favorite people, Mr. Burt Reynolds! Now, when I made the Stuffed Burger Bundles on Tuesday night with my friend Jason, I didn’t have Burt in mind, but I think that Burt would like this dish, it’s beefyContinue reading Stuffed Burger Bundles for Burt Reynolds →

Liberace Day?

According to THIS website, today is LIBERACE DAY. Now, it’s not his birthday, because that’s on May 16 (remember? I did an entire week of Liberace-inspired dishes). So why would today of all days be Liberace Day? Oh, who cares? Any excuse to pull out photos of our good friend Lee! BTW, did you hearContinue reading Liberace Day? →

Hooray for Hors d’oeuvres: Artichoke Devils

OK, it’s the last day of hors-d’oeuvres! We go back to the Smirnoff Brunch Book to the BEFORE THE GAME chapter for a nibble from the All on a Summer’s Day menu: It’s the “in” thing to watch football, baseball, and basketball and hockey on TV in the comfort of your own home in the company ofContinue reading Hooray for Hors d’oeuvres: Artichoke Devils →

Hooray for Hors d’ourves: Pickled Mushrooms

Another one! This recipe is from The Smirnoff Brunch Book (1971). I first saw this book when it was featured on YesterdaysMenus.com I commented on how much I enjoyed the photos and recipes form the cookbook, and I was so surprised when the owner of the site, Heather, said she’d send it to me so I couldContinue reading Hooray for Hors d’ourves: Pickled Mushrooms →

Hooray for Hors d’Ouerves: Avocado Dip & Marinated Shrimp

Hors d’ Ouerves Week continues with two other dishes from card A1 from the Cookindex recipe card set. First up is Marinated Shrimp! The little pink pan there indicates that this is an electric skillet dish. Isn’t it so funny how big the electric skillet was in the 50s? I mean, I love mine–but whyContinue reading Hooray for Hors d’Ouerves: Avocado Dip & Marinated Shrimp →

Hooray for Hors d’Ouerves: Deviled Eggs

Hors d’Ouerves Week continues with a party classic, Deviled Eggs. This recipe is from the very cool Cookindex (1959) card set that I received from the very lovely Susan Marks, the author of the book Finding Betty Crocker: The Secret Life of America’s First Lady of Food and the accompanying Betty-themed blog. She is also a filmContinue reading Hooray for Hors d’Ouerves: Deviled Eggs →

Hooray for Hors d’Oeuvres: Double Weenie Wreath

Howdy, kittens! Are you somewhere that’s getting snow? If so, I really hope that you went out shopping yesterday and already have your milk, bread, and toilet paper. I’m looking specifically at our friends in New York and New England. Speaking of New England, I only remember it snowing once when I lived in BostonContinue reading Hooray for Hors d’Oeuvres: Double Weenie Wreath →

Yinzerella’s Lazy Pierogie Casserole

It’s going to snow here today. I don’t know how much, but snow is in the forecast. And when snow is in the forecast, there is nothing better to eat than a big, stick-to-your ribs, comfort food casserole. And when it comes to comfort foods, two of the best are pierogis and lasagna. There areContinue reading Yinzerella’s Lazy Pierogie Casserole →

Happy Cheese Lovers’ Day!

January 20 is a day for those of us who love cheese to celebrate. And I really love cheese. I actually have CHEESE listed on my OKCupid profile under “6 Things I Could Never Do Without.” Also included: cable TV and liquor stores. I’m a classy gal. Anyway, a shit-ton of cheese has made itContinue reading Happy Cheese Lovers’ Day! →

Uncle Bob’s Jell-O Salad

This was part of Casey’s Ham Loaf dinner. Which I haven’t written about yet. But I will. And then link back to this post so you’ll remember that THIS is the Jell-O that went with the loaf. The Sandwich: Happy Birthday, Elvis!

Happy Elvis Day, my friends! Today Elvis would have been 80. That totally blows my mind. Frank Sinatra died at 82 and performed and recorded almost right to the very end. Tony Bennett is frickin’ 88 and just released an album with Lady Gaga. Just think of what Elvis might be doing right now hadContinue reading The Sandwich: Happy Birthday, Elvis! →

The @smirnoff Ice PIck (1975) "Andrea is meeting my family for the first time.
I told her to wear white.
It isn't a must at The Club, but definitely--strongly--recommended. And here she comes in looking like a McDonald's employee with her toes hanging precariously over the edge of her sandals. They're gripped on for dear life as she tries to play croquet.
At least in those ugly pants you can't see the Smirnoff Ice Pick she spilled all over herself. I don't think she knows she's not drinking iced tea. Uncle BoBo keeps refilling her glass. She sways ever slightly more with each shot.
Uncle BoBo can't stop staring at her.
I don't know if it's because he's offended that she totally miffed the dress code, or if he's trying to figure out what she looks like under all that brown corduroy.
I hate Uncle BoBo.
Oh god, would it have killed Andrea to wear a pastel?"
