The Knoxapocalypse is Nigh! Olive Wreath Mold

So I did another gelatin challenge. Do you remember the first one? When I made the Swedish Jellied Veal?  Ah, good times! Well, me and some of my internet friends decided to test our mettle with another gelatin celebration. And isn’t Labor Day–summer’s last hurrah–the perfect day to serve up some Jell-O salads? The correctContinue reading The Knoxapocalypse is Nigh! Olive Wreath Mold →

The Joys of Jell-O: Rainbow Cake

Darlings, I feel like I’ve been away from you for so long. And perhaps I have been. In lieu of writing I’ve been out doing–Honfest, the gym, art shows, food truck rallies, and parties, and dates, and a trip to DC to see NKOTB(!). But I’m back. For a bit, anyway. I’m totally broke soContinue reading The Joys of Jell-O: Rainbow Cake →

Roast Lamb & Kale Curry a la Leftovers (with chutney Jell-O)

Every year for Easter I have a big ol’ roast leg of lamb. And then every year I end up with a whole mess of leftovers. But that’s not a bad thing because every year I make lamb curry. This Easter was no different. Oh, but this year I added a Jell-O mold. The bonelessContinue reading Roast Lamb & Kale Curry a la Leftovers (with chutney Jell-O) →

Wiener Wednesday: 115. Hot Appetizers

So I threw myself a birthday party! (over 2 months ago) So sue me.  I don’t remember every detail of the party or have photos of everything–it was my party after all. And I had, like, 10 people over. So I was busy. And buzzed–from a punch!–but I’ll talk about that later. So I celebrated meContinue reading Wiener Wednesday: 115. Hot Appetizers →

National Jell-O Week: The Thrilling Conclusion!

I’ve had so much fun with National Jell-O Week that I don’t want it to end. And it doesn’t have to!!! Ms. Surly at Vintage Recipe Cards just threw down the gauntlet and double-dog dared me to make this dish, the Pineapple-Cucumber Salad: I’m not one to turn down a Double Dog Dare. Plus, I feelContinue reading National Jell-O Week: The Thrilling Conclusion! →

National Jell-O Week: Sunken Treasure

The very mysterious-sounding Sunken Treasure comes to us from Amazing Magical Jell-O Desserts: 72 Gelatin & Pudding Recipes Your Kids Will Enjoy (1977). My co-worker, Donna, gave this to me for Christmas after finding it at a thrift store–you know, because I am now Weird Jell-O Girl. I’m totally Weird Jell-O Girl! So much soContinue reading National Jell-O Week: Sunken Treasure →

National Jell-O Week: Jell-O 1-2-3

National Jell-O Week continues! I have such fond memories of Jell-O 1-2-3. I have no clue as to why General Foods would discontinue making it. I mean, there are petitions to try to bring it back. Maybe it caused cancer? But since it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon, us Jell-O enthusiasts haveContinue reading National Jell-O Week: Jell-O 1-2-3 →

National Jell-O Week!

I really need to mark the 2nd week of February on my calendar because this is the second time that National Jell-O Week has snuck up on me! I am woefully unprepared. Again. I will attempt to make numerous jiggly treats this week to share with you; but in the meantime, get in the spirit of the seasonContinue reading National Jell-O Week! →

30. Lamb in Wine With Mushrooms

This is another dinner that I made so long ago that I almost completely forgot it. The only reason I know that I made this dinner and that I had to eventually write about it is because I have been carrying around the recipe card for No.30 in my datebook (yes, I still use aContinue reading 30. The Joys of Jell-O: Raspberry Chantilly

While I was on Labor Day holiday back in Pittsburgh, my mum hosted a dinner for one of my oldest and dearest friends, Dillon, and her new husband, Chris. My mum did the normal Labor Day fare: ribs, macaroni salad, etc. But since the newlyweds are fans of Dinner is Served! I had to bring aContinue reading The Joys of Jell-O: Raspberry Chantilly →

Happy Labor Day!

Greetings and salutations, darlings! I’m going to take a little time off for the holiday, so you won’t see me here or on the Facebook page until late next week. I know that it will be hard, but don’t miss me too much. I promise that I’ll return. In the meantime, I want to giveContinue reading Happy Labor Day! →

33. Liver a la Gourmet

I have no idea why I have been unable to write this post. It’s been completely piecemeal, stops and starts, a line here, a line there, and then just apathy. This dinner turned out pretty good, and liver is such a fun subject, but I haven’t been inspired to write about it. Eventually I justContinue reading 33. Liver a la Gourmet →

Hello Jell-O: Mojito Mold

So I participated in a Jell-O mold contest (yes, a Jell-O mold contest) and won a signed copy of Hello Jell-O! by the Jell-O Mistress of Brooklyn, Miss Victoria Belanger. My winning entry was the magnificence that is Frosty Melon (although, let’s face it, the Jellied Veal has been the apex of my Jell-O makingContinue reading Hello Jell-O: Mojito Mold →

107. Seafood Mousse

I know that I’ve mentioned that DiS! offers up desserts and brunches in addition to their giant-ass dinners. Well, #107 is a luncheon. I don’t know why, but for some reason luncheon sounds fancy. Fancier than brunch, right? And seriously, what’s fancier than crustacean-flavored Jell-O? By the way, Cleve was thrilled when I announced that IContinue reading 107. Seafood Mousse →

Swedish Jellied Veal (Kalvsylta)

This past week, with 3 other food bloggers, I participated in a Jell-O dare. Or, as I prefer to call this challenge: The Knoxapocalypse. The rules were that each of us would select a gelatin-centric recipe, the recipes would be randomly assigned, and then we’d have to make our assigned dish. No substitutions were allowed unlessContinue reading Swedish Jellied Veal (Kalvsylta) →

106. Mustard Star and Holiday Glögg

Let me apologize for going all Pulp Fiction on you with Dinner is Served! and not putting my dinners in chronological order, and writing about New Year’s before Christmas. But this is how it happened. So deal with it. Anyway, I’m going to a little bit back in time to Christmas Eve 2011. Christmas EveContinue reading 106. Mustard Star and Holiday Glögg →

Tricks and Treats!

Over the past few days I’ve really got into the Halloween spirit. This past week my office had an autumn pot-luck lunch. What to make? What to make? With my collection of vintage cookbooks, I had to go retro, of course! And what says mid-century better than Jell-O? Uh, nothing! Considering I had lemon Jell-OContinue reading Tricks and Treats! →

23. Barbecued Chuck Roast, Frosty Melon, & the end of The X-Files

Are you here for Frosty Melon? You came to the right place! It’s just at the bottom of the post. Let’s go back to 2011…. I was hoping to do something X-Files themed for the final episode of the series, but it snuck up on us. I thought that season nine was a standard-length season,Continue reading 23. The @smirnoff Ice PIck (1975) "Andrea is meeting my family for the first time.
I told her to wear white.
It isn't a must at The Club, but definitely--strongly--recommended. And here she comes in looking like a McDonald's employee with her toes hanging precariously over the edge of her sandals. They're gripped on for dear life as she tries to play croquet.
At least in those ugly pants you can't see the Smirnoff Ice Pick she spilled all over herself. I don't think she knows she's not drinking iced tea. Uncle BoBo keeps refilling her glass. She sways ever slightly more with each shot.
Uncle BoBo can't stop staring at her.
I don't know if it's because he's offended that she totally miffed the dress code, or if he's trying to figure out what she looks like under all that brown corduroy.
I hate Uncle BoBo.
Oh god, would it have killed Andrea to wear a pastel?"
