How cute is the cover of this early 1960s cocktail booklet?
It never really occurred to me to see if “Cuervo,” as in “JOSE CUERVO” was a word in Spanish. I took high school Spanish (the minimum 2 years required for graduation) and we never got to types of birds.
Jose Cuervo literally translates to Joe Crow.
Hence, the illustrations in this gem of a book with the mischievous little crow.
I looked at this recipe numerous times before I realized there’s no tequila.
Why would a Sangrita recipe be included in the Cuervo drink book if it is sans Cuervo?
So, I did a quick Google to found out what Sangrita is.
It’s a chaser. Meant to be sipped with tequila blanco.
Well, let’s give it a (tequila-free) shot!
I, of course, ended up having to make some modifications to the recipe.
I was running out of Worcestershire so there was much less than half a jigger in the mix.
I didn’t have onion salt on the spice rack, but I did have onion powder.
Instead of orange juice, I squeezed some on-the-edge-of-getting-moldy clementines that I purchased from the discounted fruit shelf at the grocery store.
THIS WAS DELICOUS. An absolute flavor bomb.
The Tobasco gave it some heat, the Clementines, some sweet. Lime made it sour, and Worcestershire gave it salt. And the tomato juice brought the umami.
This was totally tasty, with or without the tequila accompaniment.
I wish I had had more Clementine juice to make another batch.
Although not a Bloody Mary, this is close enough to be included in the Bloody Mary Bar.
DELICIOUS. 5/5 on the Tomato Scale.
