Wiener Wednesday: The Elvis Dog (Cowboy Day!)

Howdy ho, partners! It’s Wiener Wednesday! It is also 3 days to the 5th Annual Cowboy Day Cookalong hosted by our friends at Recipes4Rebels.

So today’s post is in celebration of both hot dogs and cowboys.

And Elvis.

LOGIC:

Elvis played a cowboy in multiple movies. In the film Loving You he sings–I shit you not–a song called HOT DOG.

(OK, Loving You isn’t a real western and Elvis isn’t an actual cowboy in the film, but he is a Country-Western singer. Who, again, sings a song called Hot Dog!!!)

So, hot dog song + vaguely cowboy Elvis role = an Elvis-inspired weenie worthy of the Cowboy Day Cookalong.

That makes sense, right?

The recipe is from the Nathan’s website.

INGREDIENTS

  • pack of hot dogs
  • 8 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1/2 yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 ripe bananas, chopped
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter, warmed
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Hot dog buns
  • 1/2 cup roasted peanuts, chopped

PREPARATION

STEP 1

Crisp bacon in large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Remove bacon from skillet with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Discard all but 2 teaspoons of bacon fat. Add onions and saute until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in water, vinegar and maple syrup. Bring to simmer, reduce heat to medium-low and stir in bananas and all but 1 tablespoon of crisp bacon. Continue to simmer, stirring often, until thickened, about 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Remove from heat and let cool.

STEP 2

Cook your hot dogs your favorite way. We suggest pan-fried with butter! See how to cook the perfect hot dog.

STEP 3

To serve, spread banana bacon jam on each bun and add hot dog. Drizzle with warmed peanut butter and sprinkle with reserved bacon and roasted peanuts.

Mr. Sauce, Esq. was not a fan. But I didn’t hate it.

This, like so many other recipes I try out for the blog, wasn’t necessarily bad, nor necessarily good. It was weird.

I grilled up a non-Nathan’s hot dog. I think that a actual Nathan’s dog would improve the dish greatly (I don’t even know what brand I used).

I’m on board for the chopped peanuts and bacon bits, but I thought the melted peanut butter was a bit much. But, of course, you need PB for any foodstuff to qualify as an Elvis.

The bacon jam was pretty good, though. Perhaps tangy banana is now a thing?

The jam would probably be great in a Monte Cristo or some other hot sandwich. Maybe with some smoked gouda and ham. I have leftovers that I may use as an accompaniment for pancakes or French toast.

So remember, the 24th is Cowboy Day! You can find the other Cowboy Cookalong dishes by following #CowboyDayCookalong on social media or keep an eye on the Recipes4Rebels blog.

But before you go!!!

Last week I promised you a review of the new Nicolas Cage film, Pig.

Let me tell you, it was good. Really good.

If you thought it was going to be a John Wick-type revenge film, you’d be disappointed. It isn’t about a guy going ballistic and hog-wild (sorry) trying to locate his pig.

I mean, it is about finding Pig, but it’s really about loss and love (including the love of one’s work).

It was not at all what I thought it was going to be. I  There is a line at the end of the film that gutted me. I actually keep thinking about it.

Anyway, it’s great and Cage is great in it.

I highly recommend it. It is now playing nationwide.

  1. To paraphrase Calculon from Futurama, “The title of that song was so bad it gave me cancer!” AND IT WAS FROM THE PRE ARMY FILMS! Lord, if that boy had had SOMEONE in his corner imagine how much bigger he could’ve been (and I know that sounds funny seeing that the man was YUGE!) By the time he finally cut loose with the concert films in the 70s (I’m thinking of Elvis on Tour), it was too late.

As for the wiener concoction…banana bacon jam?! Maybe plantain bacon jam would’ve worked better.

    1. I once heard that Barbra wanted Elvis to play opposite her in A Star is Born but the Colonel wouldn’t sign off. Can you imagine?

      1. Man, don’t EVEN get me started on the Colonel, with his non-American not wanting Elvis to travel overseas because his @ss was over here illegally. Those post-Army songs were scheisse! Good thing he lasted until the late 60s, otherwise we wouldn’t have had the GLORY OF THE SINGER SPECIAL…the man. The black leather. The song “If I Can Dream.” OH. YOUR. GOD!

      2. It hit a little too close to home and by 1976, I don’t think anyone could’ve gotten Big E back into movie star shape. Now, if they were going to let him just play himself, I’da been ALL OVER THAT! Out of shape, constantly touring, spending money like water (with the Colonel filling his buckets). What grinds my gears is the fact that the Colonel didn’t even get that great a deal HIMSELF on Elvis’s catalog. He’d gotten into the wrong crowd whilst gambling (cough-Cosa Nostra-cough) and just sold it for nothing,

I know far too much about Elvis and Three Stooges history–even the fact that they were fans of each other, with E coming over to watch the Stooges film the Technicolor Terror that was “Snow White and the Three Stooges.” (I like it–but the Stooges weren’t that fond of it.)

And there’s your Monday morning fill of useless knowledge!

        1. I live for useless knowledge.
Out of shape, broke, washed up star is what the film called for. Elvis was BORN to play the role. LOL.

  2. Loved it! I thought “all was going to end well,” until about half-way down the ingredient list…then the whole thing just took a “turn for the crazy!” Your bravery for putting odd things in your mouth is unparalleled (and I didn’t mean that to sound as bad as it came out)! Loved the posting! Thanks for playing along… Looking forward to The Pieathalon soon!

    1. Glad to be a part of the shindig! Pieathalon invites are going out the first week of August. Keep your eyes peeled!

  3. Just went to the Nathan’s site and there’s — I’m not shitting you — a BLOODY MARY DOG! If you take requests…

    1. *scurries to Nathan’s website…..* I have all of these ingredients at home. This will happen over the weekend.

  4. Wow! This one is … really … something. Definitely the type of recipe I love reading about and am glad somebody ELSE is eating.

  5. Wow. That’s certainly a concoction. The bacon banana jam does sound interesting, especially added to the peanut butter. But I can’t imagine how that would work with a hotdog.

  6. You just wasted 8 damn hot dogs. I’ve never seen bacon jam with bananas added but that stuff is good on cream cheese too.
