148. Gondolier’s Hero Sandwiches

Behold, the Gondolier’s Hero Sandwich!

There it is. Look at that. Macaroni, gherkins, and cheese cubes floating on the Grand Canal in Venice.

Is it a Gondolier’s Hero Sandwich because the bun looks like a gondola?

Or is this sandwich the lunch of choice for Venetian Gondoliers?

I couldn’t help but wonder…

what the hell is a Gondolier’s Hero Sandwich?

I did a quick Google search to see if there was anything on the internet regarding this sandwich. The only hit was Vintage Recipe Cards.

If this doesn’t exist anywhere else on the internet, that means that this “sandwich” is a Marjon Promotions original.

God, those Marjon Promotions people were certified culinary lunatics.

The only thing wackier than the artist’s rendering of the sandwich is the recipe:

mmmmmm Provolone covered in chili sauce

FACTS:

  • I made this for a weekday lunch last month, so Mr. Sauce, Esq. missed out on this one.
  • Although I was super-intrigued by the coffee soda, I was lazy and didn’t make it.
  • In the macaroni salad I nixed the sweet pickle relish, pimientos, and the sweet pickle garnish.
  • I love me a pickle, but the sweet ones are an abomination.

COOKING NOTES:

Is this even a sandwich?
Am I to mix the salads together?
How do I eat the bun?

IT MAKES NO SENSE

Try as I might, my radish roses never bloom.

Although served on a roll, this is not a sandwich.  It’s an evil bread bowl.

Can a bread bowl can be evil…..?

Yep. A bread bowl can be evil.

I couldn’t eat this.  It was all kinds of gross.

  1. I’m definitely with you on the whole sweet pickle thing. I don’t get it. As far as the sandwich goes, kudos to you for trying it out. I think for me it wouldn’t be so bad if you topped off some good macaroni salad with good tuna salad, maybe because it would be reminiscent of tuna casserole, which I happen to like. But I would definitely nix the cheese with chili sauce part…that’s just..no. CCL club for the win!

  2. An unappetizing salad/sandwich combo; but those floating gherkins in original photo take it over the top. Oof! Not sure why those coffee sodas look equally unappealing, though. They just do.

    1. Honestly, I was prepared to make them, but I didn’t want to make coffee and I didn’t want to buy coffee ice cream–which would be the way to go.

      1. Back in the day Dairy Queen had a coffee sundae which was this clear, almost black
espresso syrup- whose recipe would love to find. It would make a perfect soda (Manhattan Special!) or martini. But searching such on Pinterest yields either varied flavored syrups as coffee additives, or chocolate/mocha/espresso versions. Wonder who DQ sourced their coffee syrup from? That would be a great find..

        1. I am now trying to remember if we had that when I worked at the DQ. I may be getting it confused with that weird walnut sauce that no one ever ordered.

  3. I really like how your photo has that 70s vibe to it, but no matter how many times I tried to put a positive spin on that ingredient list, I couldn’t come up with any variation that sounded even remotely good to me. Wow.

I give you beaucoup credit on this one.
