Joys of Jello: Sunset Salad (1963)

This dish is part of an upcoming DiS1972 dinner–Liver ‘N Onions.

I have made Perfection Salad before, but it was a long time ago.

This version is from the DiS1972 series for 36. Baked Swiss Steak.

I remember not hating it, even though it is vegetables suspended in Jell-O.

Since I already conquered to Perfection Salad, I decided to switch it up a bit and consult the cookbook collection for good substitute. I came upon Sunset Salad from my 1963 copy of the Joys of Jell-O.

Although not as questionable as the Perfection Salad (and why is it called that? who knows), it does include vegetables–the carrot. And some optional pecans.

My mum likes pecans, and since I was cooking for her, the optional pecans were a go. I also used orange jello instead of lemon, just because orange sounded better to me.

Admittedly, this salad kind of reminded me of the Halloween horror that was Jack-O’Lantern Salad.

But this salad was infinitely better because it also included pineapple!

It unmolded beautifully. And it was tasty.

100% would try again.

  • As much as I enjoy making fun of molded salads, I have to admit that I kind of love this one. My grandma used to make it (without the pecans, though). I love pecans, but not sure how they would be in this. The texture of be-Jello-ed nuts always seems too waterlogged to me.

  • Sunset salad was a family favorite. My mom used to add orange supremes or mandarin oranges to it as well. Sometimes she'd also mix in some Dream Whip. It was my job to grate the carrots -- until Mom got her Cuisinart. ;)

Looking forward to reading about the rest of the dinner! :)
