Murder, She Wrote Cookalong: Thomas Magnum’s Crunchy Tuna Melt

Jenny Hammerton, the author of Cooking with Columbo and Cooking with Joan Crawford, and the mastermind behind Silver Screen Suppers is at it again with the upcoming Murder, She Cooked: a Cabot Cove Cookbook.

In anticipation of the book, cooks all across the interwebz were assigned recipes from the cavalcade of celebrity guest stars on Murder, She Wrote.

I got Thomas Magnum’s Crunchy Tuna Melt.

That’s Thomas Magnum as Magnum P.I.—-as in Tom Selleck.

For when that little voice inside you is hungry. I have made this recipe for Tom since he was a little boy.

-Martha Selleck, Tom’s mother

  • 2 cans water-packed tuna, drained and flaked
  • 1 cup finely chopped celery
  • 1/4 cup chopped green pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • dash of black pepper
  • 6 slices Roman Meal bread or other favorite bread, toasted
  • 6  slices cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

Combine first 7 ingredients, put on bread, top with cheese. Broil.

So here we have it–Selleck and a sandwich. I’m just missing the waterfall part of it (there are waterfalls at the end of the post).

The result wasn’t bad. It wasn’t a groundbreaking dish by any means, but it was a good lunch.

FYI, the Magnum/Fletcher connection is from a Magnum P.I./Murder, She Wrote 2-episode crossover in 1986.

I do not know what happened in these episodes, but it is responsible for bringing this epic moment into the world.

So it was 100% a successful project.

As promised, here are some of pics from the best (and now defunct) tumblr in the world: Selleck Waterfall Sandwich

  • Just read through this a second time and it made me laugh so much. The Selleck Waterfall Sandwich artwork is just GENIUS. This is the kind of thing the internet was invented for. Thanks a million for testing. I'm working hard on the book at the moment, gawd knows when it will be finished. I want a crunchy tuna melt. Love from London, Jx

  • I loved Magnum P.I. and I love tuna melt. I don't know why they've attempted to recreate the show, but it's not the same.

  • This is amazing! A Murder, She Wrote cookbook might be the one thing that finally makes me want to spend time in the kitchen.
