For National Sandwich Day: Isaly’s Chipped Ham Barbecue

Yesterday was National Sandwich Day, which, should be celebrated nationally. It would have absolutely thrilled me to observe the day with a McRib, but, alas, the damn things never made it anywhere near BaltimoreWanted: McRib

So, I made a barbecue sandwich of a different sort, Pittsburgh’s second-most favorite sandwich (after Primanti’s), the chipped ham barbecue.

I featured this sandwich once before, and it was excellent. So I decided to do it again. But this time I made a much smaller amount, enough for two sandwiches. One that I had for dinner last night. And one that I will have for dinner tonight while I finally put all of my clothing in drawers

Let me note that this whole moving-into-a-new-house thing is quite the undertaking. But it will be worth it.

Look, Ma! A real stove!

my stove

Can you believe it? It’s not fancy or anything. But it works. And it’s big enough to fit a cookie sheet. isaly ham bbqAnd I did indeed use a cookie sheet to bake the little curly fries that I made to go with my sandwich, but first, let’s get to the sandwich.

No, I did not use the recipe on the right. I did my own little version (which is based on the recipe that I used the last time I made these). But I think I am going to have to try the little recipe above because it says that they are WONDERFUL. And, there’s only only 6 ingredients.

Here’s my version:

Chipped Ham BBQ Sammiches

1/4 pound chipped chopped ham (Isaly’s, if available, or any shaved deli ham)
1/4 small onion, finely chopped
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1/2 cup HEINZ ketchup
3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1/8 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon  yellow mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 hamburger buns

Melt butter in large saucepan and sauté onions for 1-2 minute until translucent.
Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 10 minutes.
Stir in the ham and simmer for another 5 minutes.
Serve hot on hamburger buns.

Chipped Ham Barbecue SandwichIsn’t that little tray cool? I have a ton of Heinz-themed kitchen stuff. My grandpa, who was a doctor, did something for H.J. Heinz company, so he got gifts from them every Christmas. Now that I have the bigger kitchen (huzzah!) I should dig it all out and start using it more.

But anyhoo!

chipped ham barbecue sandwichThese sandwiches never disappoint. I am already looking forward to dinner so I can have my second sammy.

Oh, I also want to show you that before my move I tried the “Cat Circle.” Basically, the theory is that if you make a circle, cats just inexplicably want to sit in it.

So, since I have a cat, I had to try it with Brian.

This is how it went:

I made a nice circle (or hexagon. Whatever).

Brian ignored it completely.

Brian and Tom Selleck are all “fuck you, circle.”

You cat circle people are liars. LIARS!

But, since I mentioned Tom Selleck in the same post as sandwiches, click HERE and enjoy the majesty that is SelleckWaterfallSandwich.

Here is Mr. Selleck with a McRib.

It’s my favorite.

OBVIOUSLY.

  1. Fancy new stove!
I’ll second the Morningstar riblets-they’re really popular at my house, and you can microwave them.

I wasn’t aware of the cat-circle thing. My sister has a bunch of cats-I keep picturing her trying to lure them into circles drawn on the floor. We don’t talk. Mercifully.

  2. I LOVE your new stove! Wish I had a gas stove. That sandwich looks pretty damn tasty. I see cooking a ham in my future.

  3. Heh. Congrats on the new house! I traveled to my local McDonald’s (mere feet from Ferguson, MO Central/crazy coverage central!!!!) and bought one. After a surprisingly long wait (I didn’t have anywhere to go, so it didn’t matter), I got my piping hot McRib.

Was it worth it? OF COURSE IT WAS! I knew from experience that they tend to run small, so I got 2 and chomped them down in short order. Since I’m never ever going to barbecue ribs, this is (sadly) the next best thing. I have only one complaint–the sauce needs to either be way hotter, or McDonald’s should offer hot sauce.

    1. Excellent suggestion. All I have to do is get the right buns, add pickles and onions.

I am going to keep my eyes peeled the next time I’m at my grocer’s freezer.

Once I get a meat grinder I am going to make my homemade McRibs again.
