Wiener Wednesday: Frank and Corn Crown

You may be saying to yourself, what? Huh? But I thought that Wiener Wednesdays were over!

Well, you’re right. Wiener Wednesdays are over.

But I realized that this week is the 1-year anniversary of Wiener Wednesdays, and since July is National Hot Dog Month, I felt obligated to somehow crown the achievement that was (almost*) 52 straight weeks of wieners.

And that’s what I did–literally. I crowned it. I present to you, from The Better Homes & Gardens Meat Cook Book, the Frank and Corn Crown.

DSCF5510[1]I had to make this one–it’s featured on the back cover:

Frank and Corn CrownAnd it is glorious!

So let’s get to it:

So there is the stuffing. A delectable mix of assorted canned corns, margarine, bread cubes, and raw eggs. And no seasoning whatsoever. Delicious.

That mixture is topped with bread crumbs and baked. Then the hot dogs are shoved in and baked some more.

I used turkey franks. I HAD to use the turkey franks–they’ve been taking up valuable real estate in my freezer. It was their time to go.

But because of that particular meat color that only turkey franks (well, and maybe Vienna Sausages) possess, the Frank and Corn Crown looks like a lot of different things depending on how you look at it:

For instance, zombie fingers coming out of the ground to grab your face and eat your brains.

There is something so finger-y about them.
Or a hot tub full of bald dudes:

I imagine them discussing banking and finance.

Or, well, you can decide for yourself what you think the single-serving looks like:

These photos make me want to gag  Well, I’m just setting myself up for that one (go ahead, insert your favorite fellatio joke here). But it’s true. These pics are gag-worthy. There is something so gross about these photos. I feel a little queasy looking at them.

I can’t believe that I ate this after I plated it. Can you? LOOK AT IT! I could only get a few bites in. I mean, this was utterly unappetizing. Why?

  1. Turkey Franks blow.
  2. The consistency of a creamed corn-based stuffing is just as you imagine it would be.
  3. There was absolutely no flavor other than bland.
  4. Direct your attention to the last two photographs.

But at least it gave me a reason to bust out my patriotic table cloth and use my tiny Early American Pyrex. Cute, right?

I do think that this could be a pretty good dish if you used a quality sage stuffing (hell, even just some Stove Top) and some nice sausage links. But that is not what Better Homes & Gardens wanted me to do.

And let’s face it, you, my friends, wouldn’t want that for me, either. Wiener Wednesday was never really meant to be enjoyed by me, now was it?

I still have a boat load of weenie recipes, so maybe one day I’ll come back to this. But in the meantime–does anyone have a good idea for another food-themed day?

*I say almost because there were a few weeks where I either had to post something else or I just couldn’t stand to look at another hot dog.

  1. Hrm, Foreign Food Friday? (and have fish on Sundays if necessary, since you dislike fish) Salad Saturday? Twisted Tuesday? (Where you do really weird recipes?) Of course by now you may have already figured one out. But those are my (over a year belated) ideas.

    1. I enjoy olives as well. All types–black olives, stuffed green olives, those red ones that still have the pits.

Do you have an olive dish in mind, Lawson?

      1. My mom used to make a black olive cheese ball that was wonderful! It was easy to spread and I always wanted to eat the whole thing. It had cream cheese and capers, I think. And I think that now I’m grown, sort of, I COULD eat the whole thing! Also, any olive relish, and also there’s some old recipe that involves stuffing an olive inside a prune or something, and wrapping it in bacon? And there you have two basic food groups! Olives and bacon!

  2. I love the zombie hand idea, it would make a good dish to add to my zombie marathon Halloween party or for the season opener for walking dead, thanks for the idea.
