Beverage Bonus: Bourbon Bonfire

Over the weekend Cleve and I went outside of the city and to a FARM. An actual real-life farm. We took a hayride, we got some pumpkins, and we went into the corn maze. All real autumnal-type activities, save the fact that it was 80 degrees out.

I had been in a corn maze once (or at least that I remember). But the corn was all dry and dead and shriveled and you could see over the sides of the maze. This maze was unreal. I didn’t know that corn grew so high. For realsies. This field had to have been bigger than a football field. I swear. So we made our way all the way to the back of the maze and then decided to loop our way back and go out the way we came.

Yeah. That didn’t happen. Cleve kept insisting that he knew which way he was going but we looped around and around and around and around. I wasn’t any help, either. We finally had to go out one of the side exits. The corn maze kicked our ass.

Regardless of the heat and our defeat by the maze, I still felt all fall-sy so I decided to make a fall-themed cocktail!

This is my twist on a Bourbon Furnace, which is hot cider, bourbon, whole cloves, and a cinnamon stick. I wanted to make mine a little saucier, a little spicier. So I added some spiced rum and some additional spices and the result was a Bourbon Furnace with an exotic kick. So I give you the Bourbon Bonfire!

For 4 servings:

In a sauce pan combine:

  • 3 cups cider
  • 1 whole nutmeg
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Garam Masala.

When hot, stir in :

  • 3 shots bourbon
  • 1 shot spiced rum

The result is sweet, peppery, and warming.

You may be asking yourself, “what is that behind the cocktail?”

Well, it is a GIANT PUMPKIN!

How big is that pumpkin?

Oh, it’s Brian-big!

Here is a fun game. Guess the weight of the pumpkin! Whoever gets closest to the weight without going over (Price is Right rules), will win a PRIZE. Granted, I don’t quite know what that prize will be yet, but I promise it will be retro/vintage and fabulous.

Put your guess in the comments. 1 guess per person. You have until 5pm on Friday and I’ll announce the prizewinner on Monday!

  1. I’m gonna say 12 pounds on the pumpkin. And admit that Kentucky Gentleman is my favorite bourbon.

Which will give you a clue as to how Saturday night’s going to be…

    1. Kentucky Gentleman is a fine bourbon! But you’re talking to someone who used to have Thunderbird in the fridge on a regular basis.
What can I say? We are a classy bunch. Saturday is going to be epic, I’m sure.

  2. Yergh… first time poster and it’s for a contest. Guess I’m just greedy like that. But really? Incredibly fun blog and when I discovered it a few weeks ago I read the whole thing.

Guess for the pumpkin? 14.3 pounds. SPECIFIC. Disclaimer: I’ve never seen Price is Right.

    1. Hi Elise! I’m glad that you like DiS! and I hope that you’ll continue to visit the site.
Also, how have you never seen “The Price is Right”? I thought that’s what everyone watched when they were home sick with the flu. Or on unemployment. I watched a lot of “Price is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal” when I was unemployed.

  3. After much debate here in the Dillon-Michaels household, we are going to say that it is 13lbs. Which is a poundage I would be fine with losing before holiday festivities kicked up.
I wanted to say 1lb and go hard-core Price is Right rules, but was vetoed.

  4. i think that it is supposed to be a littly chlly this weekend….i’m making this drink for steeler watching……yummy.
